The Iyengar method of yoga

The Iyengar method of yoga is basically learnt through extensive study of postures or asana and through breath control. Mr.Iyengar has systemized classical asanas and different types of pranayamas, from the simple ones to the most difficult ones. These postures have been categorized so as to help the beginner to move safely from one basic posture to the advanced one .As and how they gain flexibility, strength in the muscles and the sensitivity of the body, mind and spirit they thrive.
Asanas-
The focus of the yoga is on three points. To practice correctly with no suffering or pain one must allow the body to develop harmoniously in an anatomically correct way with proper body alignment. As one’s body structure is different from the other with its own weaknesses and strength.
Mr.Iyengar used the props to help the body flow into the correct positions that was necessary for that particular posture. These props and belts helped one to support or adjust in the various postures so that one can work in a motion that is almost safe and effective. Even though the asanas and pranayamas had healing tendencies Mr. Iyengar always insisted that correct anatomical alignment helps in the healing.
Pranayama-When the body was tuned by the asanas the breathing exercises have to be started. Students need body alignment, flexibility of the muscles, lung capacity and the training necessary to sit and breathe correctly while practicing.
Astanga yoga-asana and pranayama are just the methods with which one can attain the eight limbed astanga yoga. Moderation in one’s living is a must in the generation of the body. Too much fast living is harmful to one’s body and ultimately the mind. When one starts on yoga one begins to nurture one’s body leading to the meditative mind.

Meditation- Iyengar is of the belief that the mind is too subtle, cunning and restless to be controlled and made still. So he recommends the pranayama as the breath is used to control the mind. Controlled breathing regulates the mind. Withdrawal of the senses from the external objects will enrich the meditative state.
Iyengar yoga is just technique, sequence, and timing.

Postures cannot be effective when it is done swiftly or without awareness. The continuous practice of the asanas, and the pranayama affects one’s self at an physiological mental and spiritual level and well being as well as physical well being.
